Why Are Women The Most Vulnerable?

Even climate change is a perpetrator of gender inequality. We already learned that countries and individuals with less money are more likely to experience the damaging effects of climate change. And we also know that women make up the majority of those living in poverty. What does this mean? Women carry the brunt of the effects of climate change.

Even more concerning is that women aged 25-34 are the most vulnerable to extreme poverty. Women in this age group are also considered in their prime reproductive years. The sum of extreme poverty + children + displacement and lack of resources due to climate change? Extra-strength oppression.

Bottom line: climate change is a women's issue >

The aftermath of environmental tragedies wreak havoc for all, but especially for girls and women. There are several factors that impact the direct and indirect ways that women are affected. One thing is consistent across the board: Climate change has only made it worse. It’s increased the severity and frequency of natural disasters. Basic math: if you are a woman you are more likely to die than a man, and if you’re a woman with a low income you’re more likely to die than a woman with high income.
